ISO45001:2018-Requirements

ISO 45001:2018 Requirements

ISO 45001 was updated from its predecessor, OHSAS 18001. OHSAS 18001, Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series was a British Standard for work environment safety.

Despite being widely recognised, it was not an international standard until ISO published ISO 45001.

The ISO 45001:2018 standard brings together requirements and guidance on topics such as risk management, the role of management, risk assessment, training, auditing, and improvement initiatives into a single standard.

It provides the foundation for effective OH&S management and helps to eliminate risk by applying proven tools and techniques. It also provides a framework for integrating OH&S into all aspects of business operations. This will improve your company's performance, creating healthy workplaces that enhance productivity.

The requirements are now simplified based on ISO 9001 Quality Management System. It allows easier implementation and integration of ISO 45001 with other standards branching off from ISO 9001.

Optimized for Health and Safety

ISO 45001:2018 contains many of the same requirements of ISO 9001. The only difference is this standard is specifically designed to maximize a safe workplace environment for everyone.

The approach of this standard include:

  1. Help to create and manage an efficient and professional health and safety structure
  2. Prevent accidents and promote healthy work practices
  3. Identifying workplace risks by setting, managing objectives and supporting risk-prevention actions

By establishing this solid foundation, you have developed an effective approach to managing risks posed by your organization activities. These support organizations in meeting regulatory requirements, demonstrating compliance and leadership.

Hazard-Control-OSHMS
The Outcomes

An occupational safety management system (OSHMS) is a process that helps an organization identify, plan and control hazards.

With an effective OSHMS in place, all employees are confident their workplace is as safe as possible and can continue to do their best work.

It provides guidance on the development of a sustainable occupational health and safety management system for your business from start to finish.

Safety-Pre-Costation

ISO 45001 certification is an international management standard that establishes requirements for occupational health and safety management systems (OHSMS) for organization structure, including: risk assessment, hazard identification, implementation and maintenance of policies, procedures and overall systems.

To achieve ISO 45001 certification, you will need the management system implemented and in place before an independent auditor performs an assessment of your implementation against ISO 45001 requirements. This includes the awareness and training for everyone involved. This process will provide the necessary evidence whether your company has been meeting the requirements of ISO 45001.

ISO 45001 helps to develop a systematic approach for identifying, assessing, controlling and monitoring the risks of work related injuries.

The standard helps companies manage occupational health and safety risks, and provides documented procedures for a systematic approach to ensure those risks are managed effectively.

To successfully implement ISO 45001 standard, it is highly recommended to confer with a consultant, as it may help you in every step.

However, if you do have a highly experienced person on duty, the implementation of ISO 45001 is possible, but the chance of successfully implementing it is (or) may be considered lower, since the more help you acquire, the better the results are, the consultant acts as your solid foundation.

  • Preparation to implement the system, this includes participating in related training and establishing awareness for everyone.
  • Implement the system, this includes with or without the help of consultant.
  • Identify and close any gap that separates you and the standard requirement.
  • Perform internal audit to ensure the system is followed, and generate the supporting documents to act as evidence of compliance to the requirement.
  • Certification audit will be performed by a third-party organization known as an certification body.
  • Once compliance has been achieved, the company is awarded with a 3 years certification validation period, to demonstrate that the ISO 45001 requirements has been met.
  • To maintain the status, the company must maintain compliance and continuously improve the system.

To successfully achieve ISO 45001 certification standard, it may (or) be expected to be at least minimum 3 months and up to 9 month. This includes the readiness, preparation of your company and the audit scheduling.

Improve awareness of the standard for everyone. This will work with educating, inspiring and helping others to understand the commitment and benefits the standard brings in. Get help in implementing if it is ever required.

When companies are audited against this standard they are evaluated on a number of criteria including the effectiveness of their safety management system, the competence of personnel involved in implementing the processes and procedures provided by the system, and suitability of facilities to enable safe working practices.

Generally, a manual, policy, objective and records of the operation activities are the best evidence to support the conformance of ISO 45001 requirements. However, not all documents are mandatory for a successful certification.

ISO 45001 focuses on the well-being of people in the workplace. It manages specific requirements and points out the gaps of danger in any areas that may not be possible before.

Preparing to implement ISO 45001 is a very important undertaking. It is encouraged to be certified, and make use of your resources to help reduce unwanted work risks and hazards.
The ISO 45001 management system is applicable for both public and private organizations. It can be used by any organization or entity regardless of the number of employees or type of industry.
ISO 45001 is the newest version of an ever growing series of standards aimed at ensuring the safety, health and welfare of employees. The primary goal of the standards is to ensure that workers are safe while they are on duty.

ISO 45001 is an international standard, a performance-based management system to improve health and safety management. The existing OHSAS 18001 standard is enhanced and strengthened by this new international standard.

The ISO45001 standards were developed in order to satisfy worker concerns with broader details regarding how health and safety were being managed within the workplace.

ISO 45001 accreditation is an independent third party audit process that proves to your customers and stakeholders that you have met a set of globally agreed-upon management system requirements.

The standard provides companies with a set of principles of good practice, general requirements and guidelines for integrating OHS into the overall business strategy.

The companies who have engaged and achieved ISO 45001 accreditation, will allow themselves to continue managing the current status and development processes around their health and safety objectives, problems, challenges and risks.

Companies that successfully implement ISO 45001 are more likely to reduce lost-time injuries, provide a safe and healthy workplace environment, preserve their brand name, and be ahead of local and international laws & regulatory compliance requirements.
